Chronicle Heritage performed a cultural resource desktop assessment for a fiber optic line route with an Area of Potential Effects (APE) comprising 768 miles

Project Overview

Chronicle Heritage conducted a cultural resource desktop assessment for Byers Engineering Company of approximately 768 miles for a proposed fiber optic line route across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. The APE for this desktop assessment comprised the entire footprint of the corridor. The purpose of the assessment was to identify previously recorded archaeological resources, previously conducted surveys, and relevant permitting areas traversed by the proposed project.

Program activities included:

  • Assessment completed in accordance with federal regulations, including the NRHP criteria in 36 CFR 60 through 79, National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended
  • Study was also consistent with state regulations for Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia

Recommendations

  • Chronicle Heritage recommended that cemeteries and heritage preserves, as well as NRHP-listed, NRHP-eligible, NRHP-potentially eligible, unknown, or unevaluated resources within corridor be avoided.
  • If avoidance is not possible, Chronicle Heritage recommended coordination with the relevant SHPO to determine if any further work is necessary.

Chronicle Heritage recommended avoiding all cultural resources within the corridor, including cemeteries and NRHP-related sites. If avoidance isn’t feasible, they advised consulting the SHPO to assess the need for further action.
