Cultural Resource Assessment Survey for the 6MD2650B Cellular Colocation Modification Project

Chronicle Heritage performed a reconnaissance survey, during which the colocation building itself was documented as a newly recorded Historic Property

Project Overview

Chronicle Heritage performed a cultural resource assessment survey on behalf of Atlas Technical Consultants for a proposed T-Mobile cellular communications antenna colocation project at 1688 Meridian Avenue in Miami, Florida. A pedestrian reconnaissance survey was conducted at the colocation site to assess any potential impacts to cultural resources, including archaeological sites and historic resources. The colocation building dates to 1961 and, as such, is considered a Historic Property.

Program activities included:

  • Background research conducted to identify any known cultural resources in the Area of Potential Effects (APE)
  • Field investigations for the study area included pedestrian reconnaissance and visual inspection of the study area
  • The records of the Miami-Dade Property Appraiser were searched to determine if the colocation building was over 50 years in age and if it had been previously recorded as a Historic Property

Achievements

  • One newly recorded Historic Property, the colocation building itself, was also documented and newly recorded as 8DA23131.
  • Resource 8DA23131 is a newly recorded nine-story commercial office building constructed in 1961 in the Miami Modernist architectural style. Research indicates the building was designed by internationally renowned architect Morris Lapidus (LoopNet 2024).

  • 52 previously recorded Historic Properties were found within the APE, including eight resource groups and 44 structures. Two of the resource groups identified are historic districts and listed in the NRHP. Many of the structures are contributing resources to the districts within the APE.
  • Based on the results of the CRAS, it is the opinion of Chronicle Heritage that the proposed colocation project poses no adverse effect to Historic Properties located within the APE for direct or visual effects.
  • The Florida State Historic Preservation Office concurred with the opinion of Chronicle Heritage, stating that the proposed undertaking will have No Adverse Effect on Historic Properties.

“Chronicle Heritage was able to complete the survey on behalf of Atlas and T-Mobile for collocation of cellular antennas and equipment. Documentation and assessment of potential impacts to the historic collocation building were provided as part of the FCC Form 621 for review by the Florida Division of Historical Resources. Chronicle Heritage received concurrence from the DHR and the communication project was able to proceed as designed and on schedule.”
